Zhuhai Gateway city

@ Skidmore Owings & Merrill
SITE:   Zhuhai, China
SCOPE:   75k square meters
COMPLETED:   2015
MY ROLE:   As the project designer on this project, I led a team of 4 that involved 1 urban designers, 1 architect, 1 landscape architect, and a commercial real estate analyst. I conducted the preliminary feasibility study, design sprints, and workflows with all consultants.
Project Overview

In 2013, the Zhuhai Customs Port became the busiest pedestrian port in China. Located at the border between Zhuhai, Macau, and Hong Kong, the Zhuhai Port is a point of entry for over 99 million travelers each year. To capitalize the high volume of foot traffic, the Zhuhai Realty Group acquired the land area in front of the port for redevelopment. We were commissioned to design a proposal that would transform the property into an iconic commercial hub for the entire Zhuhai-Macau region.

The challenge of the project was making the flow of people work on multiple levels to distribute the influx of pedestrian traffic across the development area. Below ground, a network of retail corridors was proposed to channel visitors into the project site. At the ground level, the plan proposed a prominent plaza to bring together large gatherings during Chinese New Years. High above will be a series of landmark towers to strengthen the skyline of the Zhuhai region as a whole.

When completed in 2030, the Zhuhai Gateway City will transform the port area into a prominent destination for work and leisure.

Project Snapshots:
Below ground is a planned network of retail corridors that lead visitors from the port into the project area. Visitors will also be able to access the B2 level bus terminal for transfers to other destinations.
At the heart of the Zhuhai Gateway City is a large urban plaza for social gatherings, retail, and recreation. Visitors coming from the port via the underground retail will experience a sense of arrival when they ascend into the plaza.
The urban plaza is also part of a pedestrian corridor to connect visitors coming from the port to the Jiangjun Mountain in the north.
