The Achilles Project

@ 3SIXO Architecture
SITE:   Boston, Massachusetts
SCOPE:   3,000 square feet
COMPLETED:   2008
MY ROLE:   I was 1 of 2 designers on this project from concept design to construction completion. I managed workflows with shop fabricators, material vendors, and delivered 30% of all construction documents.
Project Overview

The clients came to 3SIX0 with a unique problem: they wanted to convert a warehouse in Boston’s Fort Point Channel District into a space with a hybrid identify of being a store, a restaurant, a bar, and a gallery. The challenge of the project was accommodating 5,000 square feet of program requirements within a floor area of only 3,000 square feet. Additionally, the clients wanted to convert the space from a retail boutique during the day into a social hub at night.

Instead of compartmentalizing the different use cases, we designed a system to bring the various activities together in a flexible floor plan. The solution was a system of sliding display cases that can be quickly rearranged to transform the entire space depending on the different programming needs throughout the day.

Project Snapshots:
A system of 28 steel and glass display cases were fabricated to showcase the merchandise. The displays cases were suspended from sliding rails and can be rearranged by a single staff member.
Each display case was suspended from the ceiling to prevent damaging the hardwood floors during rearrangement.
We refined the usability of each display case module over multiple iterations with the shop fabricators. 3D shop drawings were the main form of communication with fabricators.
The open layout guided customers through the merchandise displays as they moved towards the back bar and restaurant area.
A glowing sneaker wall was designed to serve as the backdrop to accentuate the social gatherings in the lounge area.
