Shepherd of the Valley Chapel

@ 3SIXO Architecture
SITE:   Hope, Rhode Island
SCOPE:  1,200 square feet
COMPLETED:   2008
MY ROLE:   I was 1 of 3 designers on this project from concept design to construction completion.
Project Overview

The Shepherd of the Valley United Methodist Church came to 3SIX0 with the request to build a new chapel as an extension to their primary facilities. The church, built in 1970, had grown too large and was no longer adequate for meeting the needs of worship, ministry, education, and other activities. After conducting preliminary research, we saw an opportunity to reimagine the new chapel as a multi-purpose pavilion that would inspire spiritual worship while meeting the various functional needs of the community.

Project Snapshots:
The open layout allowed the church to transform the space from a place of worship to a community hub throughout the week.

On the interior, a spiraling geometry was used to tie the floor, walls, and ceiling together like a single string wrapped around a surface.
The chapel ceiling slopes up from the southern entry to reveal a skylight at the north alter.
The exterior of the chapel was clad with red cedar to evoke the materiality of a barn, which pays homage to the form of the existing church and its rural setting.
The lobby entry bridged the church with the new chapel by combining the use of stone tiles from the church with the red cedar cladding from the new extension.
