In 2017 at OpenIDEO, we launched the beta version of Events, an event management application to help our distributed team of OpenIDEO Chapter organizers host events in their local communities. Shortly after launching Events, I conducted a series of user interviews with Chapter organizers to collect feedback for improvement. The research identified several user pain points that were preventing event engagement from scaling on OpenIDEO:
The goal of the project was to improve engagement on OpenIDEO Events for two groups of users: organizers and attendees.
In response to the user pain points, I identified the opportunity to build an integration between OpenIDEO Events and popular services frequently used by organizers and attendees. Eventbrite was identified as the first test case for the integration based on and its reach and the robustness of its API. The final integration succeeded in synchronizing event management between OpenIDEO and Eventbrite, merged cross-platform registrations into a single list for easier tracking, and also improved the overall attendee registration rate by 22% within the first 6-months after launch.
